During the rainy season, which is characterized by its inclement weather, there are occasional periods of sun exposure. Historically, it appeared as if individuals had been anticipating this precise juncture, as domestic textiles were meticulously suspended on the clotheslines. This phenomenon was previously referred to as "all flag". However, an online search reveals that the term " all flag " is becoming obsolete in this context. The term "all flag" originally denoted the practice of a warship flying a string of signal flags and other banners from bow to stern to express celebration on festive or auspicious occasions. The practice of displaying vibrant laundry from house to house has been described as "all flag," a term that alludes to the visual resemblance of this arrangement to a warship adorned with flags from bow to stern.
As a boy during the war, I developed a keen interest in fighter planes and warships. Upon hearing the term "all flag", my heart would race as I envisioned a majestic warship sailing across the sea with its flags fluttering in the wind. However, following the cessation of hostilities, a period of peace ensued, accompanied by significant economic development and a notable improvement in living standards. This period also marked a significant increase in industry, which greatly enhanced the convenience of daily life. The advent of the dryer, a pivotal technological advancement, led to the widespread adoption of this practice, thereby eliminating the necessity of outdoor laundry hanging. Consequently, the sight of "all flag" became a rare occurrence. Consequently, the term "all flag" has become obsolete and is no longer in common use. Nevertheless, periodically, I encounter scenes that merit characterization as "all flag."
From the vantage point of my study, I am able to observe numerous apartment balconies. Among the notable features of the residence is a generously proportioned balcony that is well-lit by natural sunlight. It is noteworthy that the presence of individuals in the area is infrequent; however, during a period of respite from the rainy season, the balcony was observed to be adorned with a profusion of laundry. The balcony, which was capacious, was utilized for the air-drying of numerous articles of clothing, including large futons and what appeared to be fitted sheets. The event can be characterized as a traditional "all flag." The scene was all reminiscent of of my childhood, evoking fond memories. Pursuant to the continuation of the observation period, it was noted that the practice of air-drying clothing was observed to occur with regularity on days characterized by favorable weather conditions. It is possible that they have been contracted for the specific purpose of handling laundry drying.
It is evident that oversized items of laundry are not compatible with household dryers. It is entirely plausible that the subjects are utilizing the sunny balcony for commercial purposes. From a number of perspectives, this appears to be a significant undertaking. This approach represents a means of leveraging solar energy, a renewable resource, particularly in the context of rising global temperatures resulting from climate change. This also allows them to turn extreme weather conditions to their advantage and skillfully make the most of temperatures that sometimes exceed 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It is imperative to note that, in comparison to artificial or mechanical drying methods, this approach is significantly more gentle on the fabric. On one occasion, I observed an individual suspending laundry on the balcony. From a distance, she appeared to be a middle-aged woman. Her movement exhibited both ease and efficiency, indicative of a well-rehearsed and refined technique. It was evident from her modus operandi that the act of hanging laundry constituted an integral element of her quotidian existence, characterized by serenity and tranquility.
Therefore, it can be posited that the term "all flag" has not yet become entirely obsolete in contemporary discourse. Notwithstanding the aforementioned points, naval forces continue to navigate the world's waters with great frequency. On occasion, they are adorned in full regalia, thereby exhibiting their majestic presence. The original meaning of " all flag " remains a point of interest. Nevertheless, it would be desirable to see " all flag " found on people's homes proudly displayed. The term " all flag " in its original sense should become obsolete; it is hoped that " all flag " symbolizing peaceful daily life will remain very much alive.
