Profile and Babel-Related Publications

PROFILE

  • Professor Emeritus, Hiroshima University, where I taught from 1993 until 2018, in the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences—courses included English Skills, Debate, Phonology, Phonetics, Linguistics
  • Currently a part time Professor at Fukuyama University (2022 – present), teaching English to first and second year students
  • Director General, Hiroshima International School, in charge of the Board of Directors, overseeing the complete operations of the K1 – K12 international school (2018 – present)
  • MA and PhD in Linguistics from the University of Washington (Seattle), BAs in English and in Linguistics, University of California, Davis
  • Currently reside in Hiroshima, Japan (since 1993)
  • Born and raised in San Anselmo (Marin County), California
  • I am NOT a translator, but rather a professional EDITOR of all things written in English—both original and translated texts, both scientific and literary
  • I teach two writing courses in the Babel University Professional School of Translation, both related to Plain English—these are not required courses, so there are usually few enrolments—one of them, the more advanced course (“Writer as Editor”) is both challenging and useful, and outside of Babel, at the universities I have taught at, has been taught successfully for many years—I encourage you to consider taking it—it is quite useful for both first and second language users of English—giving participants the essential opportunity to learn higher level English writing skills from an English native speaker (and professional English editor) with a wide range of experiences with Japanese writers, and with the Japanese language and culture.
