「私の挑戦ーBUPSTでの勉強」小池　堯子さん

アメリカ生活２０年、アメリカ人に日本語を教えているものの自分自身はいつしか日本語から遠ざかる生活を送るようになっていた。言葉は文化だ。じゃあ自分の文化の根底は？日本語と英語の接点は？そんな時バベルのニュースレターで無料のWS資格試験のお知らせを読んだ。翻訳の勉強がしたい、でも経済的な問題があって二の足を踏んでいた私にとってこれは一つの機会だった。PCの知識が乏しく、PCを通しての学校という点に不安はあった。時間的な問題もあった。が、幸いWSに受かり１年次の学費の大幅免除という後押しができて、いろいろな不安を抱えながら思い切ってバベルへ入学という挑戦を行った。当初ウロウロする私に懇切丁寧に助言してくださった事務局の方々の対応もバベルという学校の姿勢が感じられ、それは現在も続いている。また翻訳だけでなくPCのクラスもあり、限りなく勉強するチャンスに恵まれている。課題を送りその添削を読みながらの勉強は大変だが、後は本人の努力あるのみと言い聞かせているこの頃である。

I have been living in the USA for almost 20 years, and have been teaching Japanese for a long time, but I feel that I am losing my own language. I believe that language is a culture, so what is my root of the culture? Where is the crossing point between Japanese and English? When I was thinking those things I read the news letter from BUPST and found out about the Working Scholarship. I had wanted to study translation for a long time, but it was too expensive for me to take classes. Besides, I didn’t have enough knowledge using a PC, so I was very worried about PC studying. Also, since I was tutoring several classes per week, I wasn’t sure if I had enough time to study. Since it was free, I took the WS test anyway because wanted to find out what my translation level was. Fortunately, I passed my test and got the fellowship and was excused from half of first year enrollment fee. That was a big help! I decided to take the challenge and take classes at BUPST. At first I had no idea what to do, or how to do anything, but I got very kind help from the administration office staff, and that help is still continuing. There are also PC classes in addition to the translations classes, so if you would like to study more, then you can do more. Your opportunities have no limitation!

Of course it is very hard to study by yourself, sending your reports and checking what your mistakes are and how to make more accurate translations, but I’ve learned something since I started at BUPST last July. You are the main key to your own success. When you work hard you will get what you want, and when you work harder, then you’ll get even more. (Student’s Transcript)

一流のパラリーガルを目指して木村　純子さん

現在私は、法律事務所で法律文書の英文翻訳の業務をしており、それらは主に外国の裁判所に提出する訴訟書面、企業の契約書、外国の法令などの英日翻訳です。アメリカの大学を卒業し、法律事務所に勤務する私にとって、パラリーガルとして法律翻訳を仕事とすることは、語学力と法律事務の知識を同時に活かせる絶好の場となっています。英語翻訳の仕事量の増加に伴って、扱う書類の種類も多岐に渡るようになり、私は基礎から翻訳を学び、実用性の高い翻訳スキルと能力をすぐ身につける必要性に迫られました。学校選びの中で、最終的にバベルに入学を決めたポイントは次の理由からです。 ①インターネットで学習が出来ること（=仕事との両立が可能）、②修士号の学位が取得可能であること（＝明確なゴールの設定）、③学生の大半が社会人であること（＝社会人に配慮したカリキュラム）、④休学や履修期間の延長が可能であること（＝海外出張や赴任、出産や育児など予測不可能な事態でも学習の継続が可能）、そして、⑤ワーキングスカラシップ制度があること（=学費が節約できて、さらに翻訳の経験が積める）でした。ワーキングスカラシップでは、これまでに社内報用のアメリカの団体のニュースレターの英日翻訳や法令翻訳を経験させてもらいました。専門的な翻訳では、用語をインターネット等で調べながら進めていく必要があり、また正確性も求められるので、大変な面もありますが、良い勉強となっています。

I am paralegal working at a law firm that handles mainly with the cases related to the corporative lawsuits overseas. My job is to help lawyers translating contracts or agreements between corporations, documents submitted to the court, and laws and regulations of some foreign countries when newly decreed or amended. In order to meet rapidly increasing workload of translation in the firm, I am required to become skillful paralegal, which means doing work faster, more accurate, and more professional. There are 5 reasons I decide to study at BABEL University Professional School of Translation and they are as follows: 1)E-learning; 2)Offering Master’s degree; 3)Majority of student body composed with part-time students having job; 4)Flexible with temporary leave and re-entry when long-term business trip or oversea transfer as well as childbirth and nursing; and 5) Offering working scholarship. Working scholarship system is one of the beneficial supports that BABEL provides for students by deducting a part of academic fees in exchange that students help BABEL’s translational work, and this system also provides students with good opportunity for the practice of translation and becoming aware of translational job. 翻訳修士を目指し夢の「実現プロジェクト」の立ち上げ齋藤美帆さん

英語大好き、文章を書くのも得意、読書が趣味、の私が描く引退後の長い（？）人生での夢のひとつは、海外で出版された書物を多く読み、その感動や驚きを日本語で多くの方に届ける、ということです。リーマン・ショック後の金融危機で一時仕事から離れたのがきっかけで、その夢の「実現プロジェクト」を立ち上げることになりました。米国在住で、いつ職場復帰するかわからない私には通信教育が条件でしたが、情報収集すればするほど、バベル以外に選択肢はないと確信するに至りました。まず、米国で正式認定された学位はバベルでしか取得できないということ。実績や知名度のない身分では、非常に強力な信用につながります。次に、バベルが翻訳請負、出版、翻訳者派遣等、関連実務に深く関わっており、実社会での要求に沿った教育内容が期待できること、そして将来バベルを通じてキャリアの足がかり、発展につながる可能性が高いと考えたことです。30年以上もの実績があるのも、バベルの成功と信用度を裏づけすると考えました。母と一緒にワーキング・スカラシップを申請した一番・ﾌ理由は、自分のモチベーションを高めるためです。受講科目の勉強、課題提出はチャレンジングで楽しいのですが、「自分のため」だけではない、もっとシビアで時間制限のある要素があると、能力向上の密度があがります。もちろん、早い時期から実務に慣れていくまたとない機会でもあります。今では、近い将来、翻訳にいろいろな形で携わっていくのも夢ではなくなったと期待が膨らんでいます。。

As a person who is in love with English, reading and writing, I’ve had a post-retirement dream plan of translating and conveying all the thrills and surprises I find in various books in English that I read. Taking advantage of free time while I was out of work during the financial crisis, I decided to get started to achieve that goal. I narrowed down my search by focusing on online education and came across Babel among several similar-looking options. Then, as I learned more, I came to be convinced that Babel would be the only choice for me because: 1) Only at Babel, you can earn an accredited master’s degree in the US which endorses your credibility; 2) Because Babel is also involved in related businesses including translation service, publishing and dispatching translators, you can expect hands-on learning and potentially expand your career opportunities through Babel after you complete the courses; 3) History of more than 30 years in the business shows how successful and sustainable Babel has been.

The main reason why I applied for the Working Scholarship was to raise my motivation. Learning courses and completing assignments is of course challenging and fun. However, I wanted something more strict and time-sensitive, something not just for myself, in order to improve my learning curve. Of course, it would also be the best way to have hands-on experience before I become independent in the future. I have always had a talent for learning foreign languages rather quickly and decided that I wanted to become a translator when I was in high school. Japanese was my language of choice because I found that the grammar and verb conjugation was very different from English and other Romance languages, therefore interesting. I have been studying Japanese on my own with textbooks since 2002, was able to take Japanese courses in college for 2 years, and had the opportunity of studying abroad at Kansai Gaidai University for a semester, where I was completely immersed in the Japanese language. I think that Babel Professional School of Translation is the perfect school through which to obtain my master’s degree because it allows me to study from wherever I am through the online course options, as I do not live in Hawaii or Japan. I would be able to work at my own pace. My chosen major would be the Patent, Technical and Medical Translation, as I would love to contribute to the world the future of technology through translation. My ultimate dream job would also be to translate websites, because I have been doing web design and development since I was in junior high school. It combines both of my hobbies and would be a very enjoyable career.

2007年にシベリア大学で翻訳・通訳技術を専攻し卒業しました。翻訳・通訳技術とともに英語・日本語と母国語のロシア語も勉強してきました。卒業後大学から日本語教師を勤めるよう頼まれて、喜んで受け入れました。若い人たちと交流しながら好きなこと－言語学、翻訳、日本－を教えるのはありがたいと思ったからです。教師をしていた時に、ロシアと日本の翻訳会社に履歴書を送って、在宅フリーランス翻訳者として登録しましたが、日本語から英語へ、日本語からロシア語への翻訳の知識と能力が足りないと感じました。地元の学校とか翻訳会社では翻訳能力を上げるための上級翻訳コースを備えなかったので、外国の学校に入学しようと思いました。私はPROZ.COM（世界最大規模の翻訳者・通訳者の登録団体）に登録しているので、ある日BUPST（Babel University Professional School of Translation）のことが詳しく書いてあるニュースレターをもらいました。BUPSTのホームページを定期的に検討して、「あ、これがちょうどよい！」と思いました。BUPSTではインターネットを通じて世界のどこからでも上級レベルで翻訳技術を勉強したり、ワーキング・スカラーシップ生として色々なタスクに挑戦したりできるからです。日本語能力試験一級を持っていても、日本人のように日本語ができない私は入学ができるかと色々心配がありましたが、合格ができて、特許・技術・医薬翻訳専攻を選びました。技術翻訳は需要が高そうで、在宅フリーランス翻訳者を目指している私には一番いい専攻だと思っています。

I have graduated university with specialist degree in Translation & Interpreting in 2007. My majors were English and Japanese with Russian as a native language. At the time I was offered a job of teacher of the Japanese language in my Alma mater, and I was happy to jump aboard because I liked working with young people and spreading the word about the things that I love Elinguistics, translation and Japan. Being a full-time teacher I tried to keep my translation practice with freelance jobs. As time went by I realized that I lack certain knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality translation from Japanese language to English or Russian. Local schools or translation agencies could not offer any advanced courses or guidance in this field, and so I decided to search for a foreign school. As I was a registered member at Proz.com I got a newsletter mentioning Babel School of Professional translation. I carefully studied the BUPST homepage Eit was just what I needed! It offered an advanced hands-on course in translation and gave an opportunity to study from anywhere in the world via the Internet. I was not sure I would make it through the entrance exams, because despite having JLPT 1 I could not say that my Japanese language abilities are anywhere near the native level. But I passed the exams and enrolled to Patent, Technical and Medical Translation course. Technical translation is in demand, so it seemed a reasonable choice for someone who wishes to support themselves by working as a freelancer.

翻訳は日本とつながるツールの一つ上品朋子さん

　私は幼い頃からアメリカに住んでいて、日本にも殆ど帰っていません。従って昔から日本との繋がりも殆どありませんでした。その為、翻訳はある意味その数少ないつながりの一つでした。例えば本を読んでいる時、「これが日本語だったらこんな感じかな」と想像してみたり、翻訳された物を読んで「私だったらどう翻訳してたかな」と考えてみたり。　他にも、母の為に説明書等を翻訳したりと、翻訳は私にとって日常の一部でした。ですが、その翻訳を「仕事」にするには不安があったんです。ちゃんと勉強して翻訳を覚えたわけでもないのに、翻訳家になっていいんだろうか？と。　そんな時、母からバベル翻訳大学院の事を聞きました。私は直ぐにバベルのホームページを確認して思ったんです。「此処なら私の望むような翻訳家になれるかも」と。また、ワーキングスカーラーシップがあるのもバベルを選んだ理由の一つでした。勉強をしながら経験をつめる上、学費も安くなる、という所が私には魅力的に感じたので。　私は少しせっかちですが、落ち着いてバベル翻訳大学院でベストを尽くしたいです。

I have been living in the United States since I was small, and have not went back to Japan that much. Therefore, I did not have much connection with Japan since then. Because of that, translation was in a way one of that few connection I had with Japan. For example, while reading some book, I would imagine “how would this be like in Japanese” or when reading some already-translated things and think “wonder how I translated this if I did it myself?” and think up the translations in my head. Other than that, I have translated things for my mother like instruction manuals and so on; translation was practically part of my life. But still, I had some worries when it comes to making that translation to my “work”. It was not like I studied translation properly; was I really good enough to be a translator?

It was then that I heard about Babel University Professional School of Translation from my mother. So I went and checked out Bebel’s homepage immediately, and it made me think that “I might be able to a translator that I want to be if I learn here” so I chose here. Another reason I chose Babel was because it had the working scholarship system. To be able to gain more experience while learning and have my tuition lower was really appealing to me. Though I am a little impatient, I would like to calmly do my best at Babel University Professional School of Translation.

医薬翻訳者を目指して将来へハースィマンディ

2002年に初めて日本に住む機会が与えられ、日本の素晴らしさに感銘を受けた私。日本の人々、風景、文化などに出会い、私にぴったりあうように感じました。日本語も、ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字の三つの字体があり、大変奥が深い言語だと思います。そして、日本語の勉強をすればするほど、その奥深さに感動します。一生学んだとしても、日本語の知識はほんの僅かしか身に付かないと圧倒されます。その後、子供が生まれたので、もちろん子供と一緒に日本語を学ぶことにしました。そのために、まず自分の日本語能力を出来るだけ高めないと。日本語を親子で学ぶと決心してから、毎日日本語にどっぷりつかって過ごしています。現在、子供達に追い越されまいと必死に勉強に励んでいます。外国語を学ぶと、自分の言語から、また自分の言語に切り替える必要が数多くあります。子供達に、『それはなんという意味？』と聞かれたら、英語から日本語に変えるのは日常茶飯事です。そうするうちに、自然に翻訳や通訳の仕事を始めるようになりました。しかし、自分の翻訳レベルは大変低くて、翻訳が正・mかどうか全く分からないので、焦ることもよくあります。もっと正しい翻訳が出来たらなと考えたことは何回もあります。翻訳を正式に学びたいと思い、色んな学校のプログラムを調べました。その際、バベル大学院を翻訳のウェブサイトで初めて知りましたが、最初は学費に戸惑いました。単に翻訳講座をいくつか受けるより、認定された大学院で翻訳を習った方が基礎から徹底的に学べますが、金銭的には不安を感じ・・・。そのとき、バベル翻訳大学院のワーキングスカラシップ制度の存在を知って、早速入学の申し込みをさせて頂きました。幸いに、ワーキングスカラシップ生と認められたので、学費を稼ぎながら勉強ができて、一石二鳥。これから、医薬の分野に進みたいと思います。息子は医者になるのを目指しているし、医薬翻訳の需要はこれからますます高まると考えていますので、翻訳の出来る人がさらに必要となるでしょう

I was first introduced to the mysterious and beautiful country of Japan in 2002. I immediately fell in love with the culture, scenery, and people of Japan. However, at that point I could not speak, read or write Japanese. Determined to understand and communicate with the people around me I began to study Japanese in earnest, and have not stopped studying since. Even after moving back to America two years later, my passion for Japanese has not decreased.

After having children, I decided that I would continue learning Japanese with them. At first teaching them basic vocabulary was easy, but as they got older, I found myself having to study even more diligently in order to keep up with their learning pace! It was at this point that I first contemplated the idea of working in translation. I wanted to be able to explain to my children in Japanese material that I had read or hear in English.

As a volunteer, in 2007 I completed my first work of translation. I was astounded at how difficult translation was, and realized that just being fluent in two languages does not make one successful in translation. At this point I began researching various translation schools, but none of them offered a degree in translation. I felt that merely taking a few classes would not be enough to develop skills as a translator.

Recently, I heard about Babel University of Translation. Babel is an accredited university that offers a Masters degree in translation, which was exactly what I had been looking for. Furthermore, the working scholarship system allows me to earn my tuition while studying. This was the ideal situation for me, so I immediately applied. To my great delight, I was accepted into the university and working scholarship program.

The Babel university classes are challenging and very well organized. Although I have just begun classes, I have already found myself improving in my translation skills.

In the future I hope to work in medical translation. My son aspires to become a doctor, so I have a vested interest in this area. Also, I believe there is a high demand for quality translation in the medical field, which will allow me to be able to hopefully find steady work in the future.

夢に向かって水田希美

二年前、週一回の翻訳コースに通い始めたのが私の翻訳との出会いです。水田さん写真ロンドンに住んで20年。日本語と英語を使うのはごく自然な環境でした。それから漠然と翻訳家になろうと思ったものの、しばらくコースに通った後、曜日が合わずに一年以上その思いは頓挫していました。
昨年夏、ロンドンで出ている日系週刊誌にバベル翻訳大学院（USA）ではインターネットで授業全てを受講できるという記事が載っており、私の翻訳家への思いに再び光が差した思いでした。
「これなら今の仕事を続けながら修士号をとって、翻訳家になれる」私はすぐに応募しました。と同時に、いづれは翻訳で生計を立てていくにあたり、在学中にお仕事をさせて頂けるワーキングスカラーシップは、何よりも「力をつける」と「授業料の免除」という二点において、とても魅力的な制度でした。お蔭様でこの十月から院生、ワーキングスカラーシップ生として勉強を始めました。ゴールはまだまだですが、今それに向かって走り始めたところです。皆さんもぜひご自身の夢実現のため、院生、ワーキングスカラシップ生となり、一緒に目標に向かってがんばりましょう。

I started a translation course once a week two years ago, which was my first step to learn about translations.

Living in London for twenty years, it is quite natural for me to use both English and Japanese in my daily life. Since then, although I vaguely imagine myself being a translator in the future, I couldn’t continue with the course because of my work. Therefore my dream had to keep hold.

Last summer, I saw an article in a Japanese weekly magazine about the Babel University Professional School of Translation here in London. I read, “At the Babel University you can attend classes online and complete the course by internet.” I felt that my dream would surely achievable this time.

“I could continue with my work and get a Master Degree in Translation. I would pursue my dream to be a professional translator.” I applied immediately.

At the same time, because I want to be a professional translator in the future, it is very important to get some work during the course. Moreover, to get some experience and financial support through scholarship seemed the best possible idea.

Luckily, since last October I have been granted a working scholarship and am now studying the course. My journey towards my dream has begun.

家族と先生方に感謝！　長谷美紀子さん

私がバベル翻訳大学院（USA）に入学を決めたのは、インターナショナル・パラリーガルになるために、法律や法律英語など、履修したい科目がとにかく多く、大学院へ入学すれば好きな科目がより多く履修できる、と思ったからです。充実したカリキュラムも魅力ですが、先生方の丁寧なご指導や励まし、進路に関するアドバイスなど、本当に親身になって頂き、今現在、無理なく学習を進めることができているのも、先生方のおかげです。今回、入学を決断する大きなきっかけとなったのが、ワーキングスカラシップの存在でした。ワーキングスカラシップで仕事をしながら学費の一部を支払うことができるということは、経済的な理由に加え、実際の業務に触れることができる本当にいい機会だと思いました。現在私は働きながら３人の子育ての真最中です（長男9歳、長女6歳、次男4歳）。実際には、時間のやりくりと頭の切り替えが一番の課題となりますが、「勉強する母親」を子供たちも自然に受け入れ、夫も積極的に協力してくれています。そんな家族にも感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。 BUPSTでの学習やワーキングスカラシップのお仕事を通して、本当に学ぶことが多く、また新しい経験もでき、入学を決めたことは大正解でした。先生方のご指導、家族の協力、そして今学んでいることを将来につなげるためにも、引き続き頑張っていこうと思います。

I have decided to attend BUPTS because I am very much interested in taking more courses on laws, legal English, etc. to become an international paralegal. When I checked the curriculum of BUPST, I was quite sure that I could learn a lot if I went up to BUPTS. Now, I deeply appreciate BUPTS’s staff and teachers for their help and advice as to career options. They often encourage me to keep trying harder to make my dream come true.

One more big reason to decide to attend BUPTS is Working Scholarship. This system gives me good opportunity to earn a part of my tuition as well as experience actual work. I have a job and am in the middle of child-raising of three kids (9-year-old son, 6-year-old daughter, and 4-year-old son). Under this circumstance, I sometimes have hard time to manage my time or change my pace. But, my kids naturally accept “Studying Mom”, and my husband helps me a lot. Thanks to their help and understanding, I can continue studying and working. I give big thanks to my family!

I learn and experience so many things everyday through BUPST and Working Scholarship. I feel rather strongly that I made the best decision to go up to BUPST. Supported by BUPST’s staff and my family, I am doing my best everyday to be an international paralegal. (Student’s Transcript)

以前から翻訳を勉強したいという気持ちがあり、学校、コース等を探していたところバベル翻訳大学院の存在を知りました。頂いた資料やホームページを拝見して、バベル翻訳大学院は人を育てていこうとしている学校ではないかと感じました。幸運にも、ハワイオフィスでのセミナーにて、湯浅学長、堀田副学長、講師の先生方に直接お会いする機会を得て、改めて生徒一人ひとりの将来のゴールを親身になって応援されているお姿を拝見し、この学校で自分も大きく成長できたらと思い、入学を希望しました。
翻訳の経験もない未熟な私に、学習の機会を与えて頂いたことを心より感謝しています。
ハワイに移住された方々は、留学、結婚、ビジネス投資など、ハワイという土地で新しいスタートを切ろうと様々な夢をもって来られたのではないでしょうか？ところが現実は厳しく、文化、法律の違いにより、ハワイでなら日本語だけで大丈夫という気持ちでは乗り越えることが困難な問題が出てきます。
私自身も今現在まで、１５年の在住中に様々な問題にぶつかりました。
私が法律翻訳専攻を希望した理由は、ハワイ在住の方々がこのような問題にぶつかった時に、目を通すだけでも気がめいるような法律文書を翻訳者として出来る限りわかり易く日本語に訳し、問題を抱えて重くなった気持ちを少しでも軽くするお手伝いが出来たらと思ったからです。
将来は、翻訳者としてお仕事を頂いた時、その翻訳を必要とされている方の事を思い、丁寧に全力を尽くして翻訳をする翻訳者になりたいです。

I’ve wanted to study translation for some time and learned about BUPST while looking for schools or courses teaching translation. Reading over the material I received from BUPST, as well as BUPST’s website, I felt that BUPST was a school that focused on the development of its students. I was fortunate to meet with BUPST chancellor Miyoko Yuasa, vice chancellor Tomoki Hotta, and other BUPST instructors at a seminar held at the office in Hawaii. During this meeting, I once again saw how those at BUPST warmly support and encourage students in their goals. I felt I would grow immensely at this school and went ahead and applied for admission. I am so thankful that BUPST gave me -a complete novice with no translation experience – the opportunity to learn translation. Those who move to Hawaii most likely do so while harboring many different dreams; hoping to make a new start whether it is learning overseas, marriage, or business opportunities. The reality, however, is not that easy. Due to cultural and legal differences, there are going to be issues that are difficult to overcome if you think that knowing Japanese is enough. I’ve personally encountered various problems during my 15 years living in Hawaii. The reason I wanted to become a legal translator was, when those living in Hawaii run into legal problems, I wanted to translate legal documents that can be discouraging to look at into easy to understand Japanese. In doing so, I can help lighten the emotional load of those already burdened with weighty problems. When I work as a translator in the future, I want to be a translator that considers the needs of clients and take utmost care in devoting my efforts to translation.
