Babel University Professional School of Translation believes that the occupation of professional translation is valuable to society, and accordingly has established the following ethics and standards of behavior for professional translators.

1. General Regulations

(1)  Professional translators shall follow the general ethics recognized by society, and adhere to all applicable laws and ordinances.

(2)  Professional translators shall maintain a high level of dignity so that translation is recognized as a professional occupation.

(3)  Misuse of Information Prohibited: Professional translators shall not use information obtained while translating for personal gain.

2． Relationship with Customers

(1)  Confidentiality: Professional translators shall not disclose against the will of the customer any information obtained during translation.

(2)  Obligation to Exercise Care as Professionals: When fulfilling their occupational obligations, professional translators shall translate with precision and accuracy.

(3)  Conflicts of Interest: Professional translators shall not place themselves in situations where conflict of interests may arise in which the translator is torn between two parties.

(4)  Integrity: Professional translators shall always be honest with customers, and shall not conceal information that may be useful to the customer. Professional translators shall willingly provide information and material that may be useful to customers.

(5)  Explanatory Responsibility : Professional translators shall provide sufficient explanations when such explanations are requested by clients.

3. Services Provided

(1)  High Level of Service: Professional translators shall always provide high level of services.

(2)  Guarantee: In order to guarantee translation quality, professional translators shall clarify with customers whether the focus is on accuracy and complete word for word translation, or on translation which contains more conventional and terminology suitable for the target language.

(3)  Assigned Translator Provides Translation Services: Professional translators shall actually perform the services they provide to customers. Professional translators shall not assign translation work to others without the express consent of the customer prior to beginning work.

(4)  Responsibility to Supervise: Professional translators shall take responsibility for all translation work performed for customers, including work subcontracted to other translators at the customer’s consent.

(5)  Responsibility to Accept Manageable Work Load: Professional translators shall not agree to performing translation work which is beyond their ability.

(6)  Disclosure of Translation Fee Amount, Content, and Conditions: Professional translators shall clearly state translation fee amounts, content, and conditions before agreeing to perform translation work.

4. Relationships with Other Translators.

(1)  Sincerity: Professional translators shall always be sincere in their work, and shall not resort to underhanded methods

(2)  Mutual Support and Solidarity: Professional translators shall mutually support and work cooperatively with other professional translators.

(3)  Criticism from Peers: Professional translators shall not maliciously criticize other professional translators.

(4)  Establishment of Professional Standards: Professional translators shall respect and cooperate with peers in order to further improve society’s view of professional translators.

5. Improving Standards

(1)  Self-development: Professional translators shall constantly strive to improve their language ability, proficiency in their field of specialty, operation skills for devices necessary or usual for translation, and translation management skills in order to improve their translation productivity and quality.

(2)  Peer Review and Revising: Professional translators shall be able to accept and candidly listen to peer reviews and revisions of their translation work.
