It was the end of the Qing Dynasty. At the time, the Qing Dynasty was encouraging young people to study in Japan. The intention was to train them to be responsible for China’s modernization after the Sino-Japanese War. One of the most prominent modern Chinese writers, Lu Xun was one of these youths. He studied in Japan from 1902 until his return in August 1909 and engaged in some of his early literary activities. After completing his general and Japanese language studies in two years, Lu Xun entered Sendai Medical School (now Tohoku University School of Medicine) in September 1904. He had the distinction of becoming the first Chinese student to study at the University. He was motivated to study medicine due to his strong desire to reform his country, which was still under the domination of Western powers and Japan. He hoped to inspire and teach the Chinese people, who were still ignorant and unwilling to change the status quo, being deeply influenced by long-held customs. During this short period of time, Lu Xun met an earnest Japanese teacher named Fujino Genkuro, who became his lifelong mentor. The sincerity that Fujino possessed was so great that it awakened Lu Xun’s conscience and gave him the courage to stand up for his beliefs.
